Weather Cuts Breast Cancer Walk Short

Three-day walk turns into one day

This weekend’s Nor’Easter cut the annual Philly Breast Cancer 3-Day walk for the cure to a one-day event.

The walk that was supposed to begin 7 a.m. this morning at Willow Grove Park and span 60 miles over three days will instead begin 7 a.m. Sunday at 2030 Belmont Mansion Drive in Fairmount Park.

The extreme cold, gusty winds and heavy rain forced event officials to shorten the walk for which many participants spend months preparing and raising money.

Sunday’s route will match the original route for Sunday, had the three-day walk gone as planned. Closing ceremonies will be at 5 p.m. at the Navy Yard, at Intrepid Avenue and Broad Street.

Eighty-five percent of the proceeds raised go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the remaining 15 percent of donations will go to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
