Water Slowly Returns to Pa. Residents

Water service was slowly returning to residents of a northwestern Pennsylvania city where a water main break drained 5 million gallons from its storage tanks.

Kim Benjamin, executive director of the Bradford City Water Authority, tells The Bradford Era that one of the tanks, which holds 2 million gallons, was gradually refilling Thursday. But that process was diverting water from residents in some neighboring townships.

Residents were being asked to conserve water and to boil any used for drinking or cooking until further notice.

Officials say a 24-inch water main broke Monday at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, completely draining reserves in the city of about 8,800. Bradford is about 130 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Classes in the city's schools and at the university campus were canceled through Friday.
