Water Restored to Residents After Water Main Break in Old City

Crews have restored water to residents in Old City after a 36-inch water main break caused flooding and evacuations Saturday.

Workers were called to 3rd and Walnut streets around 12:30 p.m. after a report of a leak. As crews began to repair the leak the main ruptured, according to a spokesman for the water department.

Officials say three families had to be evacuated briefly but have since returned to their homes.

The break did not cause any major damage to buildings or cars. Streets surrounding the area are expected to remain closed and repairs are expected to take several weeks, according to officials.

Officials say water pressure may have been off or low during the break but should be back to normal.

Several water main breaks have occurred in the area in the past few months, including one in South Philadelphia last August that caused a giant sink hole.
