Water Main Break Floods North Philly

Officials from the Philadelphia Water Department say a broken water main poured about eight million gallons of water into the streets of North Philadelphia Tuesday morning.

A 36-inch water main broke just after 7 a.m. near 5th and Thompson Street and flooded the streets for about 90 minutes before workers shut it off.

Water rose above the tires of some vehicles parked on the streets. Fire officials went door-to-door asking residents to leave their homes and head to a nearby shelter.

Philadelphia Water Department officials say they don't know how long it will take to clean up the mess and get the broke line fixed.

The department isn't sure what caused the 88-year-old main to break though they believe that the cold weather could have been a factor.
