Water Gushes From Philly Intersection After Main Break

Water has been restored to several properties in Northeast Philadelphia after a large main break sent water gushing onto a roadway -- forcing street closures and water issues in the area.

Water began bubbling up from under Red Lion Road at Verree Road just before 7 a.m. on Monday, Philadelphia Fire Dept. officials said.

The water flowed from under Red Lion Road in several locations, sending muddy water down Verree Road in two directions. Red Lion was closed from Ferndale to Verree. Verree Road was closed for several blocks as well.

Some of the water ponded in front of the driveway of a several homes in the neighborhood.

Fire officials called the water main break "significant" and were waiting for the Philadelphia Water Department to arrive and turn off the flow.

Around 9:30 a.m., the water department has shut off the main. In total, water service to 15 area properties, including 10 local businesses, was affected, according to the department.

None of those businesses reported a loss of water but some people did say their was low pressure.

Around 5:15 p.m., water was restored to all the properties. One westbound lane and one eastbound lane on Red Lion Road remain closed however.
