Proposed Wastewater Rate Hike

Delaware's Public Service Commission is accepting public comment on a rate hike request by Artesian Wastewater Management.

The commission's meeting Monday night in Lewes involves Artesian's request to increase the flat charge for residential wastewater service from $75 per month to $98 per month. Artesian wants permission to collect an additional $342,608 in annual wastewater revenues.

The increase would affect nine residential developments in southern Delaware. They are Stonewater Creek, Heron Bay, Beaver Creek, Meadows of Beaver Creek, Reserves at Lewes Landing, Shoreview Woods, Windstone and Oakwood Village in Sussex County, and Southfield in Kent County.

Artesian says the increase is needed to fund improvements and alleviate increased costs, and that it has not filed for a rate increase since starting operations more than seven years ago.

In total, Artesian has around 80,600 customers, supplying 7.5 billion gallons of water each year, according to the company's website.
