Warehouse Fire Under Control in Northern Liberties

A three-alarm fire that ripped through an abandoned warehouse in Northern Liberties is under control.

The fire spread through the two -story warehouse around 2:46 p.m. Sunday on the 1100 block of North Howard Street.

It took a little more than an hour for 28 fire crews and 100 firefighters to get the blaze under control, according to officials.

Large, thick black smoke could be seen from miles away, according to eyewitnesses.

Luis Martin, who lives a block from the warehouse, took home video of the blaze.

"It looked like there was smoke coming out of the building and when they opened the garage the air just fueled it. Then it started bursting into flames," Martin said.

Another neighbor said the building once housed the Pennsylvania Engineering Company.

One person was transported to Hahnemann University Hospital.

Six houses were evacutated.
