Anyone traveling by foot, bike or car across the Walnut Street Bridge should expect to see changes starting Monday morning.
The federally-funded Walnut Street Bridge Gateway Project begins Monday with the closure of the north side sidewalk and adjacent travel lane between 23rd and 30th Streets, according to the Streets Department.
The focus of the seven-month-long project is to further improve the city’s bicycle and trail network. The project is set to widen sidewalks and improve pedestrian lighting and signage as well as making traffic improvements, according to the city.
Officials say the project is set to be done in phases to keep vehicles and pedestrians moving over Schuylkill River via the bridge throughout construction. In the following months the contractor will close the south side sidewalk and adjacent lanes before moving back to the north side for finally improvements, said officials.
During construction, cyclists will be detoured over the South Street Bridge during construction, officials said.
The Schuylkill River Trail is expected to remain open throughout the project.
