Verizon Closing Western Pennsylvania Call Center

Verizon says it's closing a northwest Pennsylvania call center and expects to eliminate 117 operator jobs amid a sharp decrease in directory assistance calls.

The Times-News reports Wednesday the company will close the Erie facility Dec. 28.

Verizon says calls to directory assistance have dropped by more than 50 percent over the last three years as more people use internet tools like Apple's Siri and the Google search engine to find telephone numbers and other information.

Verizon's offering severance packages with health care and dental coverage. It says call center employees can apply for other positions within the company, likely outside the Erie area.
