Thief Steals Van With Men With Mental Disabilities Inside

Police on Sunday morning were searching for a man who they say stole a van in North Philadelphia's Hunting Park section while two men with mental disabilities were sitting inside it.

Police say the thief stole the van, which was parked on Hunting Park Avenue near 13th Street while the driver ran into his home to check on an electrical problem, late Saturday night and drove off with it. Two men with mental disabilities, ages 56 and 57, were sitting inside the back of the van at the time.

Police responded after they received a report of the van theft. When they arrived in the neighborhood, they found the two men unharmed on 9th Street near Erie Avenue, about five blocks away from where the van was stolen. The van and the suspect, however, were nowhere to be found.

Later on Sunday, police released a description of the suspect provided by a passerby. The witness described him as being about 6 feet tall and said he wore a red-and-white plaid garment over his lower body.

Police continue to search for the suspect and stolen vehicle. The missing van is a 2007 Chevrolet Uplander that is champagne in color and has Pennsylvania tag 40545PD, police said.

Tipsters should call East Detectives at 215-686-3243.
