Arrest in University of Delaware Mugging

Incident was 1 of 3 robberies since Thursday

Police arrested a man they say mugged a University of Delaware College student then stole her pink can of pepper spray -- one of three recent robberies targeting UDel students.

Kyle Price and another man allegedly approached the 21-year-old victim around 7:40 p.m. Thursday night along the Newark and Pomeroy Rail Trail near North College Avenue in Newark, Delaware -- a short distance from the university -- on their bicycles and demanded money, according to Newark Police.

The unidentified victim told the robbers she didn't have any money so the men began assaulting her, according to police.

They then took her purse, rifled through the bag and took a pink can of pepper spray before riding off, according to detectives.

The victim didn't suffer any injuries.

A Newark Police investigation led to Price of Fairfield Drive in nearby Earleville, Maryland. Police in Elkton, Maryland arrested the 20-year-old Sunday.

As they searched Price, they continued to work on a description of his alleged accomplice described as another lean man in his 20s.

This robbery was one of three in the last week at the Newark college.

Another robbery took place Saturday around 7:30 p.m. at South College Avenue near Winslow Road when two students were approached by an unidentified gunman.

The suspect demanded the students give him their cellphones, according to investigators. The suspect then grabbed their phones and fled westbound on Winslow Road.

The second robbery occurred Sunday around 2:30 p.m. on Tyre Avenue just south of Main Street. An English Language Institute student at the university was walking while holding his cellphone when an armed robber approached, demanded the student’s phone then ordered him to walk down Tyre Avenue. The suspect then fled the scene with the phone.

Police didn't link either of the other incidents to Price.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Price's alleged accomplice or has information about either of the earlier attacks is asked to contact Newark Police Officer Michael Gruszecki at 302-366-7110 ext. 463.
