Underground Work Knocks Out Power to South Philadelphia Neighborhood

Underground utility work gone awry left more than 2,000 homes and businesses without power Friday night in a popular South Philadelphia neighborhood.

Homes, restaurants and bars along Passyunk Avenue and the surrounding Passyunk Square neighborhood lost power around 9:30 p.m. Patrons eating out in the trendy district posted photos of their darkened dining experiences on social media.

A PECO Energy spokeswoman tells NBC10 that a crew was working underground in the area and hit something that cut power to around 2,500 customers.

Some people had power restored about 20 minutes later, but others remained in the dark. PECO said it expects to have service fully restored by 11:30 p.m.
