UberX Driver Accused of Raping Woman in Philly

An UberX driver is under investigation after a woman accused him of raping her last month.

The woman told police the driver picked her up in Old City back on February 6 and raped her inside his car.

Philadelphia Magazine reports the woman told police he drove her around for more than two hours before finally letting her out.

"The trip in question...concluded with the driver dropping off the rider at the address where the Philadelphia Police Department 5th District station is located," said Taylor Bennett, a spokesman for Uber.

The spokesman said Uber was never notified by police that a rape investigation was underway and that they only learned about it Tuesday through news media, meaning the driver was still working for Uber over a month after the alleged rape took place.

"Upon learning of the incident, we immediately contacted the Philadelphia Police Department to assist in their investigation and support their efforts in any way we can," Bennett said.

The driver was deactivated as of Tuesday and will no longer do pickups, according to Bennett.

"As the investigation continues, the driver's access to the Uber platform has been suspended," Bennett said. "While we do not know the identity of the victim due to the Philadelphia Police Department's privacy policy, our thoughts and prayers are with her."

Special Victims Unit Detectives told NBC10 they are investigating the woman’s report but no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.

"The driver has been interviewed by the Philadelphia Police Department," Bennett said. "He continues to cooperate in their investigation."
