Uber-X Hits 1 Million Rides, Thousands of Drivers in Philadelphia

Uber X, the ride sharing service deemed illegal in Philadelphia has given a million rides in the city in just six months.

"We've had over 6,000 drivers in Philadelphia sign up in the last six months, we've had over a thousand drivers a month sign up and gaining access to the Uber platform," said John Feldman, who manages the company's operations here.

Feldman says he's seeking a permanent rule for Uber in all parts of Pennsylvania.  The service is considered illegal in Philadelphia but the state Public Utilities Commission is running it on a test basis outside the city.

"What the PUC has called for and we support is legislation that makes these rules permanent and that include Philadelphia with the exact same rules as the rest of the state," he said.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority, which has jurisdiction over taxis in Philadelphia continues to impound Uber-X cars.

The 1 million figure does not count rides given by Uber Black, the towncar service, which operates legally in Philadelphia, but is more expensive.
