Uber Drivers in Delaware Told to Get Business Licenses

Officials in numerous Delaware cities have asked drivers who use the ride-hailing app Uber to obtain business licenses.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that under a deal struck by Delaware and the company this year, it is unclear if Uber has to pay for a license in any municipalities. The company launched in the state in June.

Dewey Beach police have issued 18 tickets to drivers for not having $109 business licenses, but all were dismissed by the town's alderman Marc Appelbaum, according to town records. Officials in Rehoboth, Dover and Wilmington have also requested that licenses be obtained.

Uber drivers say it would be too costly to obtain licenses for each city.

Appelbaum says Dewey Beach may consider lowering the cost of business licenses to possibly $1 for all transportation options.
