Tricky Travel Conditions, Speed Restrictions as Snow Blankets Region

A Nor'easter dropped snow, sleet and freezing rain across the Delaware Valley Friday night and early Saturday morning, causing slick roadways and leading authorities to put travel restrictions in place.

Along with the Delware River Port Authority's announced speed restrictions, officials with the DRPA said the pedestrian walkway on the Ben Franklin Bridge was closed due to weather. The walkway was reopened around 10 a.m.  The speed restrictions remained in effect for most of the day.

The FAA issued a ground delay for Philadelphia International Airport Saturday morning, leading to the cancellation of about two dozen flights, according to an airport spokeswoman.

Airport officials said delays are averaging about 37 minutes and advice travelers to check their flight status with the airline, or by calling PHL's toll free number, 1-800-PHL-GATE or visiting PHL.org.

Precipitation fell overnight, creating slippery conditions on neighborhood streets --  many of which remained snow-covered early Saturday morning. As temperatures hover around the freezing mark, motorists should remain cautious of black ice.

The conditions contributed to more than 100 crashes in New Jersey.

Two Montgomery County police departments -- Montgomery Township and Plymouth Township -- delcared  snow emergencies around 3 a.m.

Montgomery Township Police warn drivers to remove their vehicles from snow emergency routes so crews can clear the roads. Any car left on a snow emergency route may be towed or impounded, they said.

The poor conditions led Camden School District officials to cancel Saturday activities, including SAT testing. The SATs have been rescheduled for Feb. 7.
