Tree Falls on Car, Sparks Fire

Officials say a tree fell on top of a car and took down wires with it, causing a fire.

Crews are on the scene of a fallen tree in the West Mount Airy section of the city. It happened Thursday afternoon on Wissahickon Avenue and Hortter Street.

Kevin Devlin tells NBC10 he was driving home when part of a giant oak tree snapped, landing right on top of his car.

"It sounded as loud as a gunshot and the tree literally just came on top of me," said Devlin. "Completely stopped the car."

Officials say the tree took down five spans of wire, broke a pole and sparked a fire. Amazingly, Devlin managed to escape with only some minor bumps and bruises.

"I'm a little shaken up," said Devlin. "I'm sure I'll be sore but I'm blessed. What can I say?"

There are currently around 60 customers without power in Mount Airy due to the fallen tree, according to Peco. Crews are currently working to replace the wires and the pole and restore power for the local residents.
