Town Plans to Sell Old Bank Vault Door

An old bank vault door could bring a windfall to a northeastern Pennsylvania town.

Dalton officials plan to sell the 8-foot-tall steel door. It's located in the new borough building, a former Pennstar Bank branch donated to the borough last year.

Officials say the antique door likely dates to the early 20th century and could be worth $50,000 to $100,000. The borough recently listed the door on eBay but took it down when several local buyers expressed interest.

The Times-Tribune of Scranton reports the door is nearly a foot thick, with a wheel-shaped handle between two metallic rods.

Councilman Bill Montgomery says the borough has no use for the vault door. Its sale could be a major source of revenue for the borough, whose annual budget is about $825,000.
