A two-year-old boy was fatally struck by a car Friday night in South Philadelphia after running between parked cars while chasing a ball.

He was hit by a 2002 Izusu in the 1300 block of Catharine Street around 6:10 p.m. Friday, said Lt. Fran Vanore. His parents brought him to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was pronounced dead around 6:30 p.m. He died of massive head trauma.

Philly.com has identified the boy as Ikie Jones Jr., although police would not confirm this.

The driver of the Izusu remained at the scene and did not appear to be under the influence of any substance.
