Toddler Found Wandering Alone in Trenton

The 2-year-old girl's mother is charged with child endangerment.

A Trenton woman is in police custody after investigators say her two-year-old daughter was found wandering alone in the streets, according to the Times of Trenton.

The child was found walking on the sidewalk by herself on Mechanics Avenue around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. A neighbor discovered the girl and alerted police.

When police arrived, they tried to find the girl’s mother, Mary Squires, 23. Unable to locate her, police then began to investigate Squire’s home where they found another child alone, according to the Times. A police officer told the Times that the house “was in squalor.”

The Division of Youth and Family Services took custody of the two children. Police eventually found Squires later during the day.

According to the Times, Squires told police that she left her daughter with a babysitter on Friday while she went out to party and get a tattoo.

Police say the babysitter called Squires on Friday around 10 p.m. and told her to come back home. Squires refused however and the babysitter left, according to police.

Squires is charged with child endangerment, according to the Times. Her children remain in state custody.
