This Little Piggy Stays Home

A southern New Jersey woman can keep her pet pig.

Morgan Slaughter had bought Sheldon in April and is raising him in her Somers Point home as a house pet.

Slaughter was notified in October that she was violating an ordinance that prohibits livestock on residential properties. She was given two weeks to get rid of Sheldon or face up to 30 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.

With the help of a lawyer who learned of Sheldon's plight from his 8-year-old daughter, Slaughter argued the municipal code didn't directly mention livestock when she bought the pig. Slaughter will not have to seek a variance.

She tells The Press of Atlantic City Sheldon is her pet and she wasn't going to give him up.
