Thieves May Have Tapped Into Your Mailbox

Thieves are swiping checks from mailboxes in Towamencin Township, Montgomery County.

The Towamencin Township Police Department is investigating complaints from residents who reported  mail missing on Monday, Aug. 10 and Tuesday, Aug. 11.

A resident from the 1300 block of Lisa Lane told authorities envelopes in his mailbox had been opened and the mail inside his box was also from other homeowners’ mailboxes in the area. He says the mail was outgoing and scheduled to be picked up. When police investigated, they determined personal checks were missing from opened envelopes.

The mail found originated from the surrounding area, including:

  • 1100 block of Lisa Lane
  • 1300 block of Steven Lane
  • 1400 block of Troxel Road
  • 1400 block of Cheswold Way
  • 100 block of Oxford Road
  • 100 block of Madison Way

Police notified the mail theft victims of the scheme and are searching for other pieces of mail that may have been discarded.

If you live in the area or on one of the residential streets affected, you are encouraged to check your bank statements and any credit or debit card accounts to identify fraud, including unwanted purchases or cash withdrawals. Police are looking into how many mailboxes were ransacked, so potential victims may not have been identified.

Police are also asking residents to place outgoing mail in their boxes as close to pick up time as possible to limit theft in the future.

If you have any information about the incident, you are urged to contact the Towamencin Township Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit at (215) 368-7606.
