Barney Fife Shot in Yard

A therapy dog who visits dying hospice patients in central Pennsylvania is fighting for his own life after being shot in his back yard in the middle of the night.

Barney Fife is a 4 1/2-year-old English bulldog who spends time with patients at Memorial White Rose Hospice in York.

His owner Bill Buckingham says he let Barney in their fenced-in yard for a few minutes around 3:30 a.m. Monday. He later noticed Barney was bleeding.

Buckingham said the bullet wasn't removed because an operation would be too invasive and anesthesia is risky for English bulldogs. Barney is on antibiotics but was back at the vet Thursday when his condition seemed to worsen.

Northern York County Regional Police are asking for the public's help in identifying who shot the dog.
