Bacterial meningitis is a contagious and potentially fatal infection of the central nervous system.

It is typically not transmitted by casual contact, but is spread by saliva or close, prolonged exposure with an infected person.

The university and city health department are in touch with those who have had close, direct contact with the student.

Temple is a state-related university in Philadelphia serving about 39,000 students.
