Quason Turner’s family struggled to make sense of his death Monday night, a day after the family celebrated Easter together.
“Quay” as his family and friends called him, was struck and killed crossing busy Route 130 in Pennsauken, New Jersey, to make his way home from a friend’s house after work at the Cherry Hill Mall.
“My baby died there alone,” the teen’s mother, LaTisha Turner, told NBC10’s Cydney Long.
The 16-year-old knew crossing the barricade was dangerous. He’d even assured his mother he would only cross at an intersection, but for whatever reason, Quay did jump the barrier around 11:25 Monday night. He was hit so hard by an oncoming car his body was flung into the parking lot of a nearby Burger King.
Susan Hyland, 40, was charged Tuesday with leaving the scene of a crime and driving with a suspended license. Police say Hyland’s niece — owner of the car which hit Turner — called 911 to report Hyland and then helped investigators locate both the car and Hyland.
LaTisha Turner called the driver of the car a coward for leaving the scene.
