Delaware State Police are investigating a car accident that killed a teenage boy and injured four other people.

It happened Thursday at 6:18 p.m. on Summit Bridge Road and Bethel Church Road in Middletown. Police say Markese Marshall-Horsey, 19, of Middletown, was driving a 2000 Dodge Durango northbound on Summit (RT 896) at a high rate of speed. Suddenly Marshall-Horsey somehow lost control of the vehicle as the roadway curved to the right at the intersection of Bethel Church, according to police. The vehicle crossed over a concrete center median and rotated into the southbound lanes of Summit Bridge.

Police say the passenger side of the Durango was struck by the front of a 2009 Chevrolet Suburban traveling southbound on Summit Bridge. Police say the Suburban was being driven by Shawn Greener, 46, of New Castle. The impact caused a fire in the engine of the Durango and engulfed the vehicle. Marshall-Horsey as well as two passengers in the rear seats managed to escape. Police say a passerby removed the Durango’s front seat passenger, Andre Smith, 17, of Middletown. Smith was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Marshall-Horsey, his other two passengers and Greener all suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police believe all occupants involved in the crash were wearing seat belts. They also say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident. Delaware State Police continue to investigate.
