Teen Accused of Setting Brush Fire in New Jersey

Police say a teenager accused of setting a brush fire in Nutley called for help.

The fire broke out along the railroad tracks between Nichols Park and the Roche property on Wednesday.

Police Detective Sgt. Anthony Montanari tells The Record newspaper the 17-year-old tried to unsuccessfully smother the flames with his jacket. Montanari says the teen called police and fire and remained on the scene.

Police charged the boy with criminal mischief and released him to his parents. His name was not released because of his age.

Montanari says a second teenager fled.

It took firefighters 90 minutes to extinguish the fire.

No homes were threatened and no one was injured.
