Atlantic City's Trump Taj Mahal Casino to Close

Trump Taj Mahal informed its workers that the casino will close this fall, making it the fifth casino to shut its doors in Atlantic City this year.

"Absent significant expense reductions, the Trump Taj Mahal is expected to close on or shortly after November 13, 2014," read an internal memo distributed to casino workers Tuesday.

The casino operator informed UNITE HERE Local 54 that the notices will be issued Tuesday -- the same day Trump Entertainment Resorts filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the memo shows.

Rumors that the WARN notices were on the way surfaced Friday.

Along with the Taj Mahal, Trump Entertainment Resorts operates Trump Plaza, which is set to close Sept. 16.

Showboat Casino Hotel and Revel Casino Hotel both ceased operations earlier this month and The Atlantic Club shut down in January.

The Taj Mahal reported a gross operating profit of $1.8 million in the second quarter of this year, but that was down 69 percent from its performance in the second quarter of 2013.

Trump Entertainment's other Atlantic City casino the Trump Plaza is scheduled to close Sept. 16 making it the fourth Atlantic City casino to close this year.

Trump Plaza reported a $3.3 million quarterly loss, down from a $143,000 profit in the second quarter of last year.
