Girl, 15, Kills Self in School Restroom: Police

A Delaware school mourned the death of a student found unconscious in a school restroom this morning.

A staff member at the Sussex Technical High School found the unresponsive 15-year-old girl around 11 a.m. inside a first-floor restroom located near the school cafeteria of the Georgetown, Del. school.

The staff member alerted other school employees of the situation and they began performing CPR on the girl, according to Delaware State Police.

The girl, who hasn’t been identified, was rushed to a local hospital where she died.

State Police said her death was being investigated as an apparent suicide and that no weapon was used in the incident. The medical examiner would determine an exact cause of death.

At no time was there a threat to any other students or staff, according to investigators.

“The Sussex Technical School District is heartbroken over the tragic loss of one of our students,” Sussex Tech spokeswoman Carolyn O’Neal said in a post on the school’s website. “Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the family members and friends of those involved. At this very difficult time our focus is on providing counseling and support to our students and staff.”

O’Neal said school, district and state-level counselors were at the school Friday to help students cope with the death. O’Neal said the grief counselors will remain at the school as needed.

She said students needing counseling outside of the school setting could call a 24-hour crisis hotline at 1-800-969-4357.
