Suspect in NJ Police Shooting Charged

Bail is set at $250,000 for the man suspected of shooting a Newark police officer during an armed robbery.

Authorities have charged 26-year-old Donald Easterling of Newark with aggravated assault, robbery and weapons offenses.

Police on Wednesday responded to a robbery in progress in a business on Clinton Avenue.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says there was a confrontation with Easterling and the 19-year veteran of the police department was shot. The suspect also was shot.

Both have been released from the hospital and Easterling is held in the Essex County jail. It's not known if he has a lawyer.

Authorities have not released the name of the injured officer.
