Suspect Shot After Attacking Police in South Philly

Man lunged at officers with large piece of glass

Philadelphia Police shot a suspect who attacked an officer in South Philadelphia.

The attack and shooting happened along the 2200 block of S. 15th Street just after 8 p.m. Tuesday, authorities say.

Police responded to a home to intervene in a domestic dispute between a man, his mother and sister, authorities say.

The 33-year-old man began acting irrationally and went back inside the home, only to reappear holding a large shard of glass in his hand, police say.

The suspect then allegedly lunged at one of the officers, prompting police to open fire. The man was hit in the chest, police say.

He was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in serious, but stable condition.

It's currently unclear what prompted the alleged attack, but authorities did say there was a language barrier between the man and police.

"While he was attacking the officers, he was yelling at the officers, but he was not speaking English...they believe he was speaking Spanish," Chief Insp. Scott Small said.

No officers were hurt in the attack.
