Suit Claims Thousands Illegally Strip-Searched in NJ

Appeals panel to consider NJ strip-search case in Philadelphia Thursday

Five former attorney generals from New Jersey have joined a lawsuit that claims thousands of people detained for offenses as minor as failing to pay traffic tickets were illegally strip-searched.

The case is scheduled to be argued before the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia on Thursday. A federal judge in New Jersey ruled the searches unconstitutional last year.

Plaintiff Albert Florence says he was strip-searched at the Burlington County Jail in 2005 after being arrested for not paying a traffic ticket, and again

His attorney says many others have had similar experiences.

In court filings, attorneys for the two counties say recent court decisions uphold the searches.
