If you head inside the gardens at Stetser Elementary School in Chester, you will find carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, peppers, beets, radishes, and string beans.
The two gardens were planted last summer and students helped with every step -- from mixing soil, weeding and watering the vegetables. Their inspiration for the project was First Lady Michelle Obama's Healthy Food initiative.
School Principal Janet Baldwin says the goal of the program was to keep the students active during summer recess and to increase their interest in eating vegetables.
The hard work of the student garden club recently attracted the attention of Mrs. Obama, after they wrote letters to tell her about their project.
The students were given an invite to help with spring planting at the White House vegetable garden. They will join other students from across the country on Monday to roll up their sleeves alongside Mrs. Obama for her 4th annual planting day.
Next week, the student gardeners will also give other classmates a taste of their hard work, when their fresh grown vegetables are added to the school lunch program.
