Stockton University President Hastening Departure With Leave

The outgoing president of New Jersey's Stockton University is leaving sooner than planned after a faculty vote of no confidence.

The university announced Tuesday that Herman Saatkamp is taking a medical leave effective immediately. His medical condition was not specified.

He had been planning to remain at the college through August.

In a statement, he says it saddens him to leave so abruptly.

His plan to transform the shuttered Showboat Casino in nearby Atlantic into a satellite campus has been stuck in legal limbo. The university bought the casino last December for $18 million.

Eighty percent of the faulty members who voted last week said the 12-year president should be condemned, though only one-third called for his resignation.

Stockton says it will start immediately to look for an interim president.
