Special Ed Teen Attacked in HS Bathroom

Parents angry that security cameras didn't catch the beating

William Anderson has two black eyes and a bruised spirit after being attacked in his high school bathroom.

The 16-year-old sophomore says he was using the restroom Wednesday morning at Abraham Lincoln High School in Mayfair when two kids attacked him from behind.

"I was about to wash my hands and two people came in started hitting me and as they were hitting me, it went blurry," he said. "It was scary, because I wasn't expecting it."

William says he was punched three times, earning him bruises to the face -- forcing his eyes to swell shut -- and a cut next to his left eye.

"I went to the hospital and just got my eye…glued," he said.

The school district and Philadelphia Police are investigating the beating, but say they don't have much to go on.

The teen wasn't able to catch a glimpse of the kids because they came at him from behind.

Security cameras were also unable to see possible suspects because crowded halls blocked views of the bathroom door, the district told William's parents. They feel that's unacceptable.

"They need more cameras," said Theresa Anderson, William's mom. "They have no idea who came in or out of that bathroom, so unless he is able to identify the students and point them out, there's no way they can lock them up."

This isn't the first time William was attacked, according to the mother. She says a similar incident happened last year. The family believes the teen may be targeted because he has a learning disability.

"You expect the school to protect your children, you know, and what else are you supposed to do," Theresa said. "You can't keep them home."

William plans to return to school Monday and hopefully put the attacks behind him for good.
