South Jersey Man Sentenced for Beating Dog to Death

A southern New Jersey man who beat a dog to death earlier this year is now headed to jail.

Atlantic County prosecutors say 51-year-old Steven Geisel of Egg Harbor Township received a 364-day county jail term when he was sentenced Friday. He also will have to serve two years of probation, pay restitution and perform 30 days of community service at the Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The 51-year-old Geisel pleaded guilty last month to animal cruelty charges stemming from the death of the female pit bull. The dog was beaten with a blunt object in a wooded area of Egg Harbor in January.

Authorities have not said whey Geisel attacked the dog.
