South Jersey Deputy Mayor Pleads Guilty to DWI

More than a year after he was arrested, Hamilton Township Deputy Mayor pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated

A deputy mayor in southern New Jersey who pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated will appeal the case.

Hamilton Township Deputy Mayor Charles Cain entered the plea and also pleaded guilty to refusing to submit a breath test on Thursday.

A judge suspended Cain's license for 10 months and fined him $562. He'll also have to install and use an ignition interlock breath device for six months on any vehicle that he drives.

Cain and his lawyer tell The Press of Atlantic City the deputy mayor was targeted by police in retaliation for police layoffs. They say officers looked up Cain's license plate earlier in the evening before he was stopped in 2011.

The judge found the police officers were credible and believable.
