Police arrested a man who they say shot and killed his father in Chester County.

It happened Monday around 6:50 p.m. at a home on the 200 block of Seltzer Avenue in Caln Township.

Police received a call for a shooting report at the location. When they arrived at the house, they found the body of Steve Washington. Washington was pronounced dead at the scene having been shot multiple times, according to investigators.

Police say further investigation and several interviews revealed that Washington had gotten into an argument with his 26-year-old son Derek Smith prior to his death. Smith then allegedly shot and killed his father.

Smith was arrested and charged with first degree murder and other related offenses. Police recovered the murder weapon and Smith is in custody, according to Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan.

“This was a family argument,” said Hogan. “At worst, it should have ended with bruised feelings. Instead, a father is dead and a son has been arrested for murder.”
