Soil Contamination Shuts Down Montgomery County Park

A sign warning neighbors to stay away from Pollack Park in Montgomery County greeted unsuspecting visitors Wednesday afternoon.

Unsafe levels of heavy metals could be to blame for the contamination, but further tests will have to conducted, officials said. Until then, the park will be closed indefinitely.

“We are working to finalize the results of a study and secure funds for cleanup required to reopen the park. We do not have a timeline for reopening the park at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience,” officials posted on Facebook.

Residents told NBC10 they are worried how a potential contamination could impact their families.

“I raised four kids here and now I’m concerned for them and myself,” Karen Bonenberger said. “It crossed my mind to put the house for sale.”

Officials discovered the contamination while upgrading the park, according to the Pottstown Mercury. A full environmental report is expected sometime next week.

“Maybe all the property in the borough that the children play on should be tested,” Bonenberger said.
