Sock It to ‘Em: Hillary Clinton Supporters Arrive Downtown Hours Ahead of Huge Election Eve Rally at Independence Mall

Bridget Black and Emma MacDonald met over coffee Monday afternoon as they waited inside La Colombe next to Independence Mall.

Both women wore yellow cards that read “The Night Before Volunteer,” symbols they were set to help out during the huge Get Out the Vote rally for Hillary Clinton later in the evening.

“I told them I would do anything and everything they needed. So here I am,” Black said shortly after 1 p.m. The Washington D.C. native is a graduate student studying political science in Philadelphia.

MacDonald, a freelance dancer living in East Passyunk, decided to help out Clinton’’s campaign after she's attended the Democratic presidential candidate’s post-DNC rally in September.

“I always supported her campaign, but then I found out there was a campaign office in my neighborhood,” she said of the Clinton office on Washington Avenue.

The streets around Independence Mall in Old City buzzed with blue shirts and loud banter as thousands began arriving in the early afternoon hours for the Clinton rally.

The candidate was expected to take the stage sometime after 8 p.m. with her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and President Obama and First Lady Michelle. The powerhouse couples will be joined by two of New Jersey’s most famous musicians, Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen.

SEPTA Regional Rail trains bringing in Clinton supporters from the suburbs were packed throughout the late morning and early afternoon. One mother brought her four-year-old daughter.

When another rider asked the little girl what she was going to Philadelphia for, the girl said in a high-pitched voice, “Hillary Clinton!”

Clinton and Republican candidate Donald Trump were making dizzying amounts of stops on the last day of presidential campaign, with Trump and his running mate Mike Pence also appearing in the swing state of Pennsylvania.

Bridget Black, 22, a volunteer for Hillary Clinton's rally at Independence Mall on the eve of Election Day, wore fitting socks. They had the face of Clinton with a background of red, white, and blue colors. Black said she got them from a friend in Texas, where the friend said the Donald Trump socks had sold out.
