Police ID Man Struck, Killed by Snow Plow

Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania have released the name of an elderly pedestrian struck and killed by a snowplow.

Police in Reading identified the victim Tuesday as 71-year-old Gilbert Birdsey, who lived about four blocks away from the scene of the accident.

The elderly pedestrian was struck and killed by a Reading city snow plow around 11:20 a.m. Monday.

Police said a city public works pickup truck equipped with a plow was driving north on 6th Street and attempting to turn left onto the 500 block of Penn Street when it struck Birdsey, who was crossing the street.

Birdsey was pronounced dead just before noon at Reading Hospital. An autopsy was conducted Tuesday but results were not immediately available.

Police and the forensic unit of the Berks County district attorney's office are investigating. Public works officials and the mayor's office haven't commented.

Parts of Berks County received up to an inch and a half of snow Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
