Sikahema: Polynesians Will Recover From Tsunami

NBC Philadelphia’s own sports anchor talks about his homeland

Former Eagle and current NBC Philadelphia sports anchor Vai Sikahema knows something about being resilient from years of playing in the NFL.

On Friday he spoke about resiliency in the face of tragedy for his people.

Polynesians are resilient, and so they will do just fine in the wake of deadly tsunamis that swept through Samoa, American Samoa and Sikahema’s homeland of Tonga, he said.

Sikahema on Friday thanked the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the American Red Cross and other agencies.

He was a special teams standout in the NFL, making the Pro Bowl in 1986 and '87. He last played for the Birds from 1992-93 before coming to NBC 10.

The focus now is supporting the survivors and taking initial steps toward recovery, said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate.
