Al Alberts, the legendary Philadelphia broadcaster who gave thousands of Delaware Valley children a platform to perform on TV, has died. He was 87.

Born in Chester, Pa. and raised in South Philadelphia, he began his career performing on WCAU's Horn and Hardart Children's Hour as a teen.

Alberts later moved onto WPVI where he launched The Al Alberts Showcase with his wife Stella.

The duo spent more than 30 years hosting the show, which aired on Saturday afternoons, giving kids their big singing break.

The Alberts moved from Cape May, N.J. to Port Charlotte, Fla. in 2001.

Alberts passed away Friday morning at his Florida home after experiencing complications with kidney failure. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
