Shots Fired at Psych Clinic; Several Injured: Police

A police officer and four civilians have been shot at a Pittsburgh psychiatric clinic, according to reports. The suspect is allegedly dead.

Someone opened fire Thursday afternoon at a psychiatric clinic outside Pittsburgh, injuring several people including one police officer, reports WPXI TV.

While there are conflicting reports of how many casualties, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that at least five people have been injured and the suspect is dead.

The condition of the three others reportedly injured is not yet known.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the police officer injured was grazed in the leg by a bullet and taken to a local hospital at about 1:45 p.m. A police union official told the Tribune-Review that the officer works for the University of Pittsburgh.

The shooting happened at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Oakland. A former nursing student who worked at the pychiatrict clinic, Pete Finelli, told the Associated Press that patient rooms are on the upper floors of the building, but anyone on the first floor would have to be someone either being admitted or discharged.

β€œThe only place a person would be on the first floor is the emergency room,” he said.

The clinic is extremely close to University of Pittsburgh campus. Most university students are currently on Spring break this week.

Pitt sent out email and text alerts shortly after 2 p.m. to warn people of the shooting.

β€œAn active shooter has been identified at Western Psychiatric Institute. Several injured. Possible second actor in Western Psych. Lockdown recommended until further notice. If safe to do so, tell others of this message,” the alert said.

A SWAT team was still on the scene at 4 p.m.

Police told the Tribune-Review that they were searching for a possible second shooter.

The clinic describes itself on its website as a top academic-based psychiatric care center. The University of Pittsburgh's psychiatry department is on the campus.
