Shots Fired After Driver Allegedly Tries to Run Over Police Officer

Police arrested a man who allegedly tried to run an officer over with his vehicle in Toms River, New Jersey, Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators say Toms River police officers approached a vehicle on Route 70 and Massachusetts Avenue around 4:15 p.m. According to police, the vehicle was suspected of being involved in drug activity within the neighborhood.

As they approached, the driver, identified by police as 24-year-old Shamar Kerr of Jackson, New Jersey, allegedly tried to run an officer over with his car. Investigators say the officer fired his gun and managed to avoid being struck.

Police say Kerr then got out of his vehicle and fled on foot. He was last seen running west on Whitesville Road.

No police officers were injured during the incident.

Police say they later found Kerr at an Exxon Gas Station on the 2000 block of Route 9 in Toms River around 8:40 p.m. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder, eluding police and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with the intent to distribute.
