Teen Fires at Philadelphia Officers During Pursuit: Police

A teen robbery suspect opened fire on officers after Philadelphia Police cornered him and two other teenage suspects in the Feltonville section of the city overnight.

Officers first responded to a 21-year-old being robbed at gunpoint at Lawndale and Luzerne streets around 1:30 a.m., said police.

The robbers took the victim's wallet, about $30 and his cellphone and fled in a pickup truck, said police.

Officers then spotted the pickup less than a mile away at G Street and Hunting Park Avenue and pulled it over but as they approached, the driver took off at a high-rate a speed, said investigators.

About three minutes later, the three young males bailed out of the truck nearby and ran off on foot, said police.

Three uniformed officers followed the teens on foot into an alley near Rising Sun Avenue and the Roosevelt Boulevard. One of the teens then fired a single shot but missed.

"(The officers) showed a lot of restraint, police did not return fire," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Police took the 17-, 18- and 19-year-olds into custody without further incident. Officers also recovered a semi-automatic handgun, said Small. Investigators didn't say which suspect fired the shot.

The robbery victim positively identified the suspects. No word if the juvenile will face adult charges of aggravated assault on police, armed robbery, weapons violations and related charges like the adults will face.
