Blunt Object Beating Leaves Man Dead in North Philadelphia

A man died after someone beat him with a blunt object on a North Philadelphia street early Sunday morning, and investigators are questioning a person of interest in the killing, according to police.

The homicide happened in broad daylight, about 7 a.m., at the corner of Broad and Jerome streets in Nicetown. Police initially believed the victim, a man in his 30s, suffered a gunshot wound to the head, but later said his wound appeared to be the result of being beaten in the back of the head with some kind of blunt object.

Police weren't yet sure late Sunday morning exactly what the killer used to hit the victim, who died at Temple University Hospital a short time after he was found in a pool of blood on the sidewalk along Broad Street.

The motive what unclear, but police said the killing appeared to happen during some type of altercation. The person of interest being questioned was not yet identified Sunday evening, and no charges were announced.

NBC10 photojournalist Kristen Catalanotto reported that a large amount of blood marked the corner where the killing occurred as police investigated Sunday morning.

Police continue to investigate.
