Cape May County Health officials closed the Ocean Street beach area after a sewage leak Monday night.

The beaches are opened to sunbathers but swimmers are not allowed in the water pending test results.

County health officials said 1,000 gallons of raw sewage leaked into a storm drain which empties into on the ocean.

The problem may be the result of a build up of grease from the many restaurants in that part of town, possibly higher than normal due to an upsurge in outside dining, according to Mayor Ed Mahoney.
