A northern New Jersey woman says that she believes a severed black bear paw was left on her front lawn to retaliate against her opposition to the state's bear hunt.
Cathy McCartney told NJ.com that she contacted police on Friday after the gruesome discovery. She called the bear paw a "veiled threat," but says it won't stop her from working with the Bear Education and Resource Group.
There were 267 bears killed during the state's bear hunt this month.
Proponents say the hunt is needed to thin the state's bear population. But critics say those goals can be attained through nonlethal methods.
