Tornado Rips Roof Off Pennsylvania Elementary School

Officials say a tornado ripped the roof off a  Berks County elementary school and severely damaged the building.

The twister hit the Blue Mountain Adventist Elementary School in Hamburg just before 7 p.m. Thursday. The storm turned the roof into a pile of twisted metal and destroyed part of the building.

Officials say 52-year-old principal Rachel Wardecke was the only person in the school at the time. She wasn't injured.

Wardecke said that the storm quickly tore a hole in the roof and covered her with ceiling tile, forcing her to crawl from the building. She says the school will open again.

The storm also knocked down trees and wires and left many without power.
